Since Josh and I started dating years and years ago, he was such a big Florida Gator fan, for obvious reasons. Anyway, he would always talk about becoming a Gator booster and getting season tickets. It has always seemed SO FAR out of reach... up until this year. Josh has worked his butt off year after year, for the kids and I and finally we were able to pull the trigger on UF season tickets. That's right, Gator Boosters Baby. And not just tickets for me and Josh, but he got us 4 tickets. So the kids will be attending their first UF Games this year. As long as we keep the Sprite and Cotton Candy flowing, they will survive (Aretha Franklin style).
Florida kicked off their season in my old stomping grounds of Orlando. They played Miami and honestly one of the best games we have ever been to. Not because Florida played amazing but because it was so close the whole time, no one sat down. The energy was incredible, the hype was all there even though they played like crap we walked away with a W. Our next home game is September 7th. It will be the first kids college football game EVER and it's a night game to boot.
My promise to Josh and the family is to get back to writing. Hold me to it. I used to love doing this, I don't know what happened. Anyway, here we are, August 21,2019.

Josh and I celebrated our 9 year anniversary this week. Holy COW where does the time go, right? It's been total rainbows and butterflies... wait, who am I kidding- we are humans, marriage is work but it's also amazing. We are in a grove of a great and happy life. We both work hard, but play hard! We still have our Sportsman fishing boat- which Cooper just won FIRST PLACE in the Jr. Angler Kingfish tournament this summer. Whoop whoop, go Coop! He absolutely loves fishing. That's his jam. He gets to spend the entire day, I mean the ENTIRE day (4am-8pm) with Daddy and all his "uncles". He's just good at it. He's interested, he's patient and he's a quick learner. I am pretty sure he can name every fish in the ocean and which lure to catch it on. He's totally dialed in. .
Our friends and old neighbors in San Marco were selling there house and called us first to see if we wanted it. They knew how much we loved the area, and eventually want to move back.... We thought long and hard about what to do, we wanted it, but knew we couldn't move the family back. It's just too small, no place for a boat and no pool. SO we thought, what about an Airbnb, a short term rental home that would give an affordable option for families to stay together while traveling. So we did it! And 7 months in, we are so far so good. The home is staying booked over 75% of the time each month. We are covering mortgage PLUS utilities, YAY! This place is truly our retirement. We've got big plans for this home and we have many many years to get it just the way we want it, demolition to be determined...
I could go on and on forever writing since I'm so behind on writing... but a quick update on the kiddos. They are doing AMAZING. Cooper is in THIRD grade, WHAT?! It's crazy to believe he is 8 years old, reading, writing, excelling in Math (like his Dad), swimming like Michael Phelps and doing anything and everything outdoors. You'll be hard pressed to find either kid on the couch playing video games. And Princess Addison, my baby, is in FIRST grade. I look at her, I see a beautiful, smart and sassy young girl. She doesn't have the toddler cheeks or look anymore, she's long and lean, she's so athletic, will even beat me in a sprint race, she's in her first full year of gymnastics, tumbling and flipping over the bars, she LOVES reading (way more the Cooper) and runs on sugar, smiles and dancing- just crank of the tunes and she's moving to the beat.
Some days seem to drag, but looking back I seemed to have blinked and it was over. Thankfully, our kids love school and the transition from late night pallet sleeping back to their own rooms and beds was smooth. Cooper entered 1st grade this year with no first day jitters, no tears and no looking back. He's enjoying his new teacher and new friends. He actually doesn't have any classmates from last year in his class, but he's pretty social and is having no problem meeting new friends. Of course, we are still riding the cheese wagon and we have some more friends riding along now! The bus stop is one happening place and Addison just can't wait to walk on the cheese.

Addison is following right along in the footsteps of Cooper. She started VPK (pre-K) this year and has the same teacher Cooper had, Mrs. Rockwell. She was through the moon excited to start school and be in Mrs. Rockwell's class, she didn't skip a beat. And if you know much about Addison, you know she's a sleeper like her Daddy, but didn't even have to get woke up on the first day of school- she was dressed in her new clothes and shoes before she even walked out of her room. She comes home everyday, excited to tell me what she did and says, "look mommy, I colored you a picture". I tell you what, we are certainly blessed to have both kids starting out loving school, let's keep it that way- right!
We loved the Regal, it got us use to the water and it got the kids comfortable out there, but we totally needed an upgrade. I just didn't think the upgrade was going to happen in 3 days. We sold the Regal on a Friday and by Monday we had a new Sportmans Bay Boat secured.... I've got a sucker for a husband. He soooooooooooo drank the Koolaid and the Greater Jax Boat Show. But you know what, I can't complain. It is slick. It's so versatile, we can spend the day at Ft. George cooking out, cruising to Silver Glen or spend the day off shore fishing. Jaxon even loves it!
Josh went to brag on me at someone at work who is about to get married and realized its been since JANUARY that I posted. It's literally on my mind weekly, I just haven't made the time. So here I am, the year is half way over and I'm on my 2nd post! Whoop Whoop!
Cooper is officially a big kid and a junior angler. No more passing for a toddler, no more passing for a little boy, he is straight up big kid status with his high top converse sneaks. And let me tell you, I don't like it. I noticed a few weeks ago, when he lost both of his two front teeth!!! My baby is getting his adult teeth. He did amazingly well in kindergarten, I never had a doubt. He's surpassed his class, school and district standards on math and reading. He's basically a genius. We've done several VBS's camps and sport camps to stay busy over summer and of course, we are still swimming at the Bolles school. Cooper says he wants to go to the Olympics, so we are giving him every opportunity we can, hoping he can take the gold in a few years. Cooper has taken up offshore fishing with his Dad and Chris and Spencer. He's such a trooper because they have to leave around 4:00 when they are in the tournaments and he never complains. He's caught several different types of fish, but he will tell you his favorite catch was a sand shark!
Addison is still a big time Daddy's girl. I mean like big time. She's got him wrapped around her fingers. I mean how could you say no to her anyway, she's so stinking cute. She too, has been busy with VBS and camps this summer. She crushed the 3 year old class at Mandarin Presbyterian. She's so smart, loving and outgoing, she'll definitely go far in life. She loves to follow in her big brothers footsteps and is also swimming at Bolles. Soon they may be on the same team, which will definitely bring a little competition to the family. Her best buddy (and all ours) next to Cooper is Jaxon, who by the way is already 10 months old and overweight! I'm working on that, so he is getting spoiled eating rice and carrots mixed in with his dog food. Jaxy seriously is the best dog. The kids really helped get him trained and totally help out with him. We picked Jaxon at such a good age for the kids being that they love to and are able to help out with him.
I mean I like dogs- they are cute, but like grandkids, I can send them back home. On the other hand, Josh doesn't think a family is complete without a dog.... so he gave me until December to find a pup for the family. I was totally opposed to anything big, like over 40 pounds, was way too big. So he said if I found a good smaller breed he would consider. So after much anxiety and deliberation with the internet, I found a French Bulldog, they are small (up to 28 lbs). They are super easy going (like me), they are totally sociable (like all of us) and they get along fabulously with children. So................ we pulled the trigger and got a Frenchie. It was basically for the kids for Christmas, but he came early (Dec 3). I feel like I have a new baby without the pregnancy. He has proven to be fantastic, he loves to snuggle, he loves the kids and is crate trained. He is already about 4 months old (born 1 day after Mamaw's birthday) and his name is Jaxon. He is already apart of the clan!

I think of last year and where we were. I was writing around Thanksgiving on how thankful I was to have my Papa still here, even though things were totally different, HE was still with us. Then a month later, we lost him. That wasn't how he wanted to live and as hard as it was (and at times now) we know that he is still with us. My kids still remember him and often times will ask Mamaw where is Papa? One day Addison asked if after school we were going to pick up Papa and bring him to Mamaw... I'm happy they still have him in their memory.

Over the last year, we have helped Mamaw clean out a ton of stuff.... mainly starting in the work shop. It brings me back to my childhood being out there. It smells the same, it looks the same, and some of our projects and paper are still there. The only thing missing is the big 6 foot something man piddling around trying to find something to build or fix. Man, he loved it out there. I've been able to reflect so much on all the details I had forgotten. And as we clean out the junk (no offense Papa), we all get a good laugh on what a great, detailed and goofy man he was to be around. We laugh because when he saw something on sale, he bough it and he saved everything: paint brushes and nails from the 70's still in the original packing, dusts masks by the 10's stacked up, operational and maintenance manuals from a shop vac he had in the 80's, retirement papers and cards, sketched out plans of clocks and canes, empty cans and mayo jars he planned on using for something- So much stuff out there and we didn't even put a dent in it yet, but so many memories. Of course it wasn't junk to him, he thought he could re-use everything. That the kind of person he was, turn just a plain ole can into happiness.

He lived a long and happy life. He had so many years of retirement and many many hours spent out in the shop. I'm so very thankful I was able to spend so many years with him and remember it so vividly. I'm so thankful God brought Josh and I home so I could spend his last years around the corner from him. I haven't had someone so close to me pass before and the loss is a great one. I have his picture by my bathroom sink. It brings me back a lot, happy and sad. It doesn't really get easier, sometimes I smile and sometimes I cry... this was the last picture where the kiddos got to see him. Love you always Papa.
Yes yes, you know, I have 2 crazies running wild daily, Benadryl doesn't even slow them down- SO what more perfect depiction of Halloween characters for the kiddos than from the movie Despicable Me 2. If you haven't seen it yet, stop what you are doing and watch Despicable Me and Despicable Me 2. These are hands down my favorite movies. There is plenty of adult humor thrown into this cartoon. You can thank me later. Anyway, Addison was the purple minion from the 2nd movie who turns complete crazy mad and Cooper is the yellow minion, still crazy but nothing like the purple one. Josh was Gru, the main villain (Gru really isn't a villain, he has a soft spot for kids and tries to save the world in the 2nd one!) and I was agent Lucy, she's a quirky agent who falls in love with Gru. So basically, these movies are awesome and we are awesome....
It tore up the whole eastern coast from Florida to North Carolina. It began as a 4, but I think by the time it got close to us it was a category 3.... Much of Jacksonville, especially close to the beaches and river were evacuated and received a ton of destruction. Luckily, we aren't in a flood zone, nor did we get it with the real strong winds, but the one day of the 1,086 days we've lived here- Friday was the only day I didn't want to have a single tree in my yard. The winds were very strong, (I'm guessing between 60-80 mph this far inland) and all the trees looked like they would snap in half and land right on the house. Fortunately, we didn't receive ANY damage from fallen trees. A ton fell around us, but absolutely no damage! Praise the Lord. Just made for an exhausting Saturday cleaning up. At least the sun was shining and it was a gorgeous day.

And like most Floridians, we had a hurricane party! Grandma Kay and Captain evacuated from Amelia Island to us. And my friend Lauren, Paige and Jason (the kids were just in their wedding) and Tim and Malinda Dooley all evacuated here too! True form to the sunshine state and the McCarty house hold, it just wouldn't be a hurricane if we didn't have a party- we had steaks, tuna, wine and lots more wine! We bunkered down and rode out the storm together, all of us- 9 adults, 2 kids, 2 dogs, 2 chickens and a cat! Definitely made for some memories... and even better ones that we walked out of the storm unscathed!
I say that because, we have had plans to go scalloping in Steinhatchee for a few months now and a little hurricane wasn't going to rain on our parade. The town was still there and in full blown vacation mode. It was like they never missed a beat. So we packed our truck and our boat and headed West. Steinhatchee is on the Gulf and known for their bay scallops. Usually the Gulf is clear and you can see right to the bottom. Well, even a category 1 hurricane it sure stirred up the Gulf. To scallop you need a good set of fins and a mask and snorkel (and crystal clear water for me!). I jumped in the water a few times to hunt for the scallops (who hang out on the sea floor) but the moment I jumped in, I felt like I was in the St. Johns River and couldn't see a thing and surely wasn't sticking my hand in the seaweed not knowing what was below. But you know, the man of the house, totally proved himself to be one heck of a scalloper. Josh filled our entire 5 gallon bucket in no time. Me and the kids just enjoyed the wide open ocean and peacefulness it had to offer along with some country jams. The boat ran good all weekend and I got to enjoy my new birthday present from Josh- a kayak. I've been wanting one for a while now and he finally picked up all the hints I've been spelling out for like 5 years now. so Yay! I love it and the kids do too! Cooper can actually paddle.
And yes, Cooper lost another tooth on vacation and No, mommy did not pull it out. It fell out while he was sleeping, thank goodnes. The tooth faiy was stingy this time, only $2. I asked Coper how it felt to have 2 teeth missing, he said "Free as a bird, like riding a bike with no training wheels."
That's right we are officially losing baby teeth. I definitely sent him to school, with a Ziploc baggy labeled "My Tooth". The wiggly teeth make my stomach turn- that's something I can't handle, blood, throw-up anything but a wiggly tooth! Cooper told me his teacher used a tissue and pulled it out when he got there. ha-ha! I'm such a weeny. But in all seriousness, this is a huge milestone that actually makes me sad.... Kindergarten, bus riding, baby teeth losing, what's next a GIRLFRIEND!???!!! Lord brace me for that day!
The Bride, Paige, who is my Best Friend Lauren's sister, married Jason (an FSU fan, but we will forgive him!) And after long anticipation, the wedding weekend came and gone in the blink of an eye (like any wedding). The week leading up to it, we were threatened with a hurricane (but if you live in and are from Florida, its just another excuse to have a party) anyway, we were threated with lots of potential rain and flooding over the weekend. But after all the worry and stress, it turned out perfect. Like a man said to me on my wedding day as it rained, "Honey, its just God's way of washing away your past and allowing you start fresh in your new life." And as y'all know, the weather cleared and it was perfect (other than it being muggy- but again, that's Florida). So, the kids were perfect and as cute as can be walking down the aisle. Addison didn't throw a single rose petal and Cooper definitely didn't walk.... he ran down the aisle, then Addison followed suit. It was like a race to the groom. Cute and funny and gave everyone a little chuckle. Both of them stood up there the whole ceremony like little angels. Cooper did tell me the best part was walking (or running) down the aisle, and he also said the worst was standing up there because he was bored. Hey- can't blame a kid for being honest, he just doesn't get it yet. Every time I look at these pictures, my heart is overcome with happiness and I thank God for this beautiful family of mine.... ENJOY
It was a fun, but long Summer with them. I love them unconditionally. But as you know, they can be sweet as sugar one minute and fight like cats and dogs the next.... so with limited play time at home together, it seems they are getting along better. The best part of back to school is, I can start running again! I took off ALL summer, but who really wants to run when its 100 degrees anyway. But, I'm back in the swing of things and back in my routine. I've got some work to do, because while I had my feet kicked up at the house, Josh was out there running with his work group with a RUNNING COACH! So he's basically professional status now. Off to hit the pavement I go. I've got us signed up for another race in a few weeks and hope I can get some miles under my shoes to train for another half marathon by the end of the year. It's been a while and I'm way over due!
In other news, I had my first official close on my own last week! So I guess you can say the real estate business is going great, since it only took 3 months to really get moving. I love it so far. It's been stressful at times, but the good definitely out weigh it all. I have a great partner, who is patient and such a great teacher! So I feel like I've been very much prepared to step out on my own. I've got another close next Friday and 2 more in September. Mama is doing work and Josh LOVES it. Before I even cashed my check, the paver guy was here giving us a quote for pavers and a fire pit off to the left of the deck. Since football season is here, we spend a ton of time grilling, watching football and hanging out by the fire, so this year we are going to do it in style!
Yes, you read that right, my more conservative child wanted to ride the school bus. He was up super early this morning, scarfed down breakfast, was dressed and ready to go with 20 minutes to spare. 20 minutes to spare after I took 100 pictures. We waited in the garage until it was acceptable to walk to the bus stop, where he is surrounded by girls! Josh told him to make sure he sits next to the pretty ones. ha! He gave me one quick kiss and off he was. I'm not the type of person who typically gets emotional on these kind of days, in fact I am usually excited for my kids and for myself (a little peace and quiet never hurt anyone). But as I watched him walk up the bus stairs with that huge grin on his face and not turning back, I found myself with that knot in my throat, telling myself- Hold back those tears Allie. My once "premie" baby who barley filled my arms when I held him was now walking onto that school bus and embarking the best journey of his life! All I can think about is where has the time gone? Some days may seem to linger, but these weeks, months and years FLY. As Kenny Chesney says, Don't Blink.
The kids have been out of school now going on 2 weeks- and Cooper took right off to Ohio. He told Jeff and Deanna he needed his "space" from Addison. So he is LOVING this mini vacation of his. This vacation to Ohio has been all this kid would talk about for about a year now. We've been counting down the days since last summer when we decided he could make the trip. Of course, we met them half way- he didn't go at this alone. But since he has been there its been nothing but farm life. He's rode horses, helped clean the horse stalls, drove the big tractor, washed the trucks.... I mean, Cooper has put his self to work. You know he loves to stay busy and outside. It's good for all of them. I'm hoping to make this a summer ritual. He's going to look back and love the summers spent on a farm. That's so Cooper too. He hasn't missed a beat and hasn't really missed us. Thank goodness for FaceTime, I think that helps us all. But we are ready to have our boy back. While its been quiet and just a bit cleaner around the house, it feels empty. I guess I've grown accustomed to the loud chaos and the box wine. LOL We pick up Cooper this weekend and we can't wait!!!!

You're probably wondering, how is Addison doing. Well, she definitely misses Coop. She asks about him everyday. But I also think she likes being the center of attention. She's getting to stay up a bit later, eat ice cream in bed, go to the beach, go shopping and pick out whatever movie she wants to watch without tears and fighting. But I can't wait to see the excitement when Addison and Cooper see each other Saturday. I have a feeling they will both squeal like little girls.

Check out how happy this "only child" has been over the last few weeks... nothing but smiles
Only one of the girls is producing an egg a day and she has been for about 3 weeks. The eggs came just in time for Easter! Red Ellie is still a tad bit smaller than Monica so hopefully we can fatten her up with some food and get her laying too. I've been able to give some eggs away and yes, they taste great. Fresher is better.

The day Monica laid her first TWO eggs (I think she was backed up) I called Josh and said, I think she's going to start laying soon. She is really singing. And by singing I mean she isn't clucking her normal cluck cluck, she's almost squawking like, get this thing out of me. And she laid right in the nest box, right next to the fake eggs I put in there to "show" her where to lay. And from them on, she's been giving me one a day. Both the girls sing daily, so I'm hoping Red Ellie pops them out soon.
We've been letting them out to roam the back yard lately and the kids go nuts. They love it. And so do the Chickens. New bugs, new dirt to scratch and it certainly gives a new meaning to free-range. Miles (our cat) doesn't seem to mind them. He looks at them like what the heck are you? He's unsure, but doesn't mess with them, yet. I don't let them out together when we aren't there. The chickens are so docile. They follow me around the yard when we are out there. They come to you when you whistle and they don't mind being picked up. Who needs dogs, when you have chickens??? I wonder why we didn't think of this sooner!
And while I LOVE my kids and I truly think I am making a difference in their life, it was time I started doing something for my self too, while still being a SAHM (for the most part). I have been doing a ton of praying, looking for signs and asking God to point me in a direction. I am one to know, God DOES answer prayers. This wasn't in any direction I was looking and I don't think it really ever crossed my mind. But I woke up one morning a few weeks back thinking Real Estate! It was like DUH Allie! I immediately opened my computer and contacted a woman (a VERY intelligent woman in fact) that I went to high school with. Josh also knew her from UF and said she was one of the smartest chick he knew. She got right back to me to meet for coffee and BOOM, I started work last week. She's looking to grow her brand and needs a buyers agent. I am doing some paid training while she is showing me the ropes. I am taking an online class and will HOPEFULLY be licensed in the next few months. I still need lots of prayers to get through this. I haven't had a single reservation about this career transition. Although, I have had some push back from people I have talked to. Like- don't you know you are going to be working every night and weekend??? You are going to lose so much family time with your kids on the weekends... blah blah blah. And while I may be naive, because I am just getting my feet wet, I am looking to start a passion and begin a life long career and by the time the kids don't want anything to do with me anymore I'll be a rock star and an expert in the industry AND the million dollar agent! I know, I know, high hopes.... but I wanted a career that provided me with the flexibility to be at home when my kids get home from school. I know I may not be around Saturday morning some times, but I am blessed with kids ( and a husband) who sleep until 9 and it only gets later as they climb closer to the teenager years. { I won't be missing much in the mornings!} So, that's my "me" life in a quick blurb, agent in training while maintaining SAHM. I'm so excited!
And the best part is we got chickens. We still have a ton to learn, but I think we have the basics- food, water and shelter. We got the girls as teenagers, as I like to say. They weren't chicks and they aren't quite mature, which means they aren't laying eggs yet. We had 4 to start with, but 2 days after we got them, one "flew" away (as Cooper says). We aren't quite sure what happened, but the only thing we can think is we received her sick and she couldn't kick it. So we have 3, Merida, Monica and Red Elephant, or Red Ellie for short. Cooper named Red Ellie. I never grew up around chickens and honestly never have been around them, but since we moved to this house on Hawkcrest, we loved using the land and it seemed easy enough. Our garden we started last year is still thriving and soon, we should have fresh eggs daily, who needs a grocery store!! And NO we aren't eating the girls. We are strictly raising them for their eggs. They are cool pets too. The kids can pet them and pick them up and since we've had them for about a month now, they are stating to come to us when we go out there. Now we just wait on the eggs!
After the hustle and bustle of the holidays, we took the kids to Disney World. It was a much needed escape to the happiest place on earth. Our holidays weren't spent the way we would have wanted, but you know what- it is ultimately not up to us. So we skipped town and redirected our selves.

Josh and I are already trying to plan another trip back. For Disney being the BUSIEST week of the year, we fought through the crowds and made the best of it. Disney allows you to set up fast passes via an app now and since it was so darn busy the good fast passes like Buzz Lightyear and Splash Mountain were taken, so we opted for the Haunted Mansion, It's a Small World and the Tea Cups (we did more than that, but we knocked these out in the first few hours). Anyway, as it turns out, the very ride experience at the Magic Kingdom was the Haunted Mansion. Talk about scarring a child. But mom, I thought this place was supposed to have Mickey Mouse they said. Anyway, Cooper loved it. Addison not so much.... She wanted out the second we got in. Her poor little head was buried in my lap the whole time. It sounds evil, but you just have to laugh. Do we get parents of the year award? LOL and it only went up from there.

They loved every ride and I think Addison could have starred at Cinderellas Castle all day just waiting for her to come out. They were really just in awe the whole time, the rides, the characters, the people. The teacups were a blast, we cracked up. Just don't close your eyes because you'll lose your marbles. Cooper wanted to do that one a few times. We only did it once though. We watched a few dance/music shows put on by Mickey and Crew. And you know what? Payback.... I had to hold Addison on my shoulders so she could see. I remember my parents having to do the same thing, only I was 5 (and heavier). Maybe that's why my mom has neck issues..... I think I owe her a massage or two. The things we do for our kids enjoyment, ugh? We even did a few things, that may have been my first time too. It's the one place you can be a kid again. There were no complaints the whole day and no tears. AND we made it out of Disney without buying a single sword, stuffed animal, mickey ears, or any other overly priced piece of magic. I packed our back pack full of snacks, juice and water too. So while we waited in some of the longer lines, I had goldfish to pass the time. SCORE!!! Both of the little minions were asleep by 4:00 in our single child Bob stroller. Luckily they love each other. It was close quarters. The trip was a success and we can't wait to go back on a less crowded day. I have a feeling it will be sooner than later.

About a month after my last post, I write this with a heavy heart. My Papa is now at peace with the ultimate creator. He passed away Wednesday, December 23, 2015. He is finally safe.

Early December he took a bad fall and hit his head- like many other falls. But this fall coupled with all the other trauma caused bleeding in his brain. He spent a few weeks in the hospital. Since the fall, he lost his ability to eat and wasn't talking much. He wasn't up and walking around and hardly opening his eyes. He just looked so helpless and uncomfortable. Although he never said he was in pain. The doctors put a feeding tube in him on Saturday Dec 19. He was moved to a rehab place on the 21st where we hoped he could regain the ability to walk and eat again. But that night, he pulled out the feeding tube that was surgically inserted into his stomach and it just went down hill from there. Mom called me Wednesday and said it wasn't looking good. School was out, so I had both kids- I called Josh and he rushed home. But shortly after the first call from Mom, I received THE call. The call that no one wants to get, even though it may be expected. I was running some last minute Christmas errands. I had to pull over and all I could do was cry. I hit my steering wheel a few times sobbing. The kids just sat in silence. One of the first times for that, I think. After a few minutes went by, I got my composure and Cooper asked, "Mommy, did Papa go to be with Jesus like Uncle Ed?" Kids are so smart aren't they?

I ended up making it to say goodbye. The social worker and funeral home waited to take him for a few hours. Mom, Mamaw and myself got to spend some alone time with him. As sad as it may seem, we sat around him, holding his hand and talking for a while. We got to say our goodbyes and hug his neck one more time. He looked so peaceful. He wasn't hooked up to machines. He wasn't struggling to breathe and move. It's the image I needed of Papa to know he's in a better place- he is safe. We aren't worried about him day in and day out. Do we miss him? Like crazy. But there is some weight lifted knowing he's not suffering.

Cooper colored Papa one last picture (to place in his coffin) and we added a few words on the back. Cooper colored a big heart and added a lot of orange and blue. He said, "I'm making this Gator Colors because God is a Gator!" Once he got done he asked me when Papa was going to come back from visiting Jesus. I said we will all get to see Papa again when we get to meet Jesus, but until then he lives in our hearts.

Rest in peace my sweet Papa. You were a great man, always had a big smile on your face and could make anyone laugh. You made my life a brighter place and that is something that can't be taken away!
Many of you know, my Papa was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s several
years back. It’s been a rough few years and even a tougher month. I’ve always
heard of the disease, knew a little bit about it, but never truly understood
what it was all about (and I still have a lot to learn). My Mamaw has been
taking care of him now for a while, on her own, and just recently had to relinquish
the control and let someone else take care of him. He had been falling a lot at
home, so she’s been quite familiar with the rescue guys and just couldn’t continue
taking those risks.

So for about a month now, Papa has a new home, its called
Elmcroft. It’s not as cozy and doesn’t smell like chicken casserole (which is a
good thing if you’ve had it!), but he’s getting adjusted, as are we. The kids
and I were there today, since he won’t be joining us for Thanksgiving this year
{bringing him around a crowd is stressful on him and unsafe without a trained
caregiver}. The kids are too adjusting, it’s hard to explain why Mamaw and Papa
don’t live together anymore. But to them, right now, it’s a cool new
place, with a new bed to jump on. I’ve been stocking his room with
crayons, coloring books and games. They even have an outdoor patio for
visiting, I think we will play soccer there next.

Anyway, today as we were
leaving, I gave him a hug, told him “Happy Thanksgiving and I’ll see you in a
few days, Love you Papa”. After a minute went by, he finally responded with "I
love you". And while I don’t think he totally knows who I am, I think he
knows I’m family. It’s so hard to see him sitting, with almost no emotion or
expression. Selfishly I think this disease is more difficult for me than it is him. He doesn't know what he doesn't know... But I know, He was always this man who was into everything with me. We built
birdhouses, teepees, dressed up like police officers, romped through the woods
and would sing “far far way, or down by the river”- his personal favs. He loved
being outside and was into things in his workshop. Today was a hard realization
looking into his eyes and knowing he would not be at the Thanksgiving table.

However, I am thankful I got to grow up with him by my side. I am
thankful we had many many good memories, many I am able to share with my own
children and many values he taught me that I want to instill in my own family. But what I am most
thankful for is I can still wrap my arms around his neck and tell him I love
him and to that I can be at peace...

<span style="font-family: "calibri";">Cooper just finished his first baseball season. I’ve got to
say, I was overall impressed. It’s not easy to coach a bunch of 4-5 year olds
who have never played before and have the attention span of a fly. I was one of
the team moms, so I helped get the kids organized and in the correct batting
order, oh and a tough job was keeping them in the dugout…. The kids don’t sit
still and would rather be climbing a tree than waiting their turn to bat. Every
game involved us yelling, “Cooper- Baseball ready!” Usually he had his back
turned to the hitter or he was drawings circles in the clay with his cleats or
he was just simply staring off into the clouds while sitting. But he wasn’t the
only one, if the kids weren’t hitting, they had no interest. Which is why the
coaches also played the field with them, not only to teach them the rules, but
also ensure they don’t get knocked out with the ball because they aren’t paying
attention. Coopers strength was hitting the ball (and since no kid got out and
no score was kept- trust me, I know what your thinking, that Nissan commercial where every kid gets a participant trophy, score is kept in the next age group, we are too competitive in the south to all be winners!) he made it to first base every time. But seriously, he does
have a good swing and surprisingly enough, isn’t shy when he’s out there. He
did have a few good stops at the ball when he was paying attention, but he
thought it was pretty boring when he wasn’t hitting and running the bases. Overall
consensus, we will start soccer in the spring and sit out next season of
baseball. We need something with more action.

We’ve been in school now for a few months and I’ve got to
say, these kids are rocking it out. They are both doing extremely well…. I mean
did you expect anything less? Addison is already counting to 10 and knows her
shapes and colors. She is also forming complete sentences and is talking more
than ever. Which means she totally understands me, but chooses to ignore me
anyway. She is very strong willed (like her Dad). Thank God I know where they
sell wine. Cooper is doing great, learning to write, color in the lines, spell,
count and do math. He is truly loving school. They have an after school program
called “lunch bunch” that Cooper did for the first time yesterday. He stayed at
school until 3PM and when I picked him up, he actually cried because he didn’t
want to go home. He’s also learning that mommy isn’t as cool as she once was. I
guess he was going to learn that eventually!
Also in other news, we just celebrated a HUGE milestone… we
have a FIVE year old in the house, woot woot! Happy Birthday to Cooper!!! This birthday
was by far the best thus far. He totally understands what it means to have a
birthday and what it means to turn 5. I struggled with planning his big day,
only because November seems to be a busy month for birthdays, but I finally got
it together and planned. He woke up the morning of his birthday and said Mom, I
woke up 5 today! All week, he couldn’t wait! I brought cupcakes to his school
and all his friends sang. On the way home, he said Mom, I can’t wait to be six….
And then seven. I had to stop him (even though I love to hear him show off his
counting abilities). I said let’s just enjoy one day of you being five before
we starting wishing the next birthday. I remember being the same way, just couldn’t
wait to be another year older. As kids we are start wishing it away and now as
adults, we get depressed to turn another year and looking back it seems
childhood flew by way too fast. Fortunately for Josh and me, we have a 2nd
chance at childhood! We get to raise two beautiful spunky loving kids! I try to
slow time down, but honestly I think it fly’s faster as a parent. Anyway,
Cooper got lots of cool presents. He’s totally into all the superhero, transformer,
star wars stuff and he got enough to last him til Christmas! HA. Hopefully
Santa is on a budget this year, I am running out of storage.

both kids did amazing, and still are doing amazing. WAY better than I thought considering they have been

nothing but happy and exciting.

The kids started Mandarin Presbyterian
Preschool. Cooper is in a state funded pre-kindergarten program and Addison is
in the two year old preschool class. Cooper’s teacher, Mrs. Rockwell says he is
just the sweetest thing. It’s funny, I thought the first thing that Cooper
would tell me about his day would be the playground, but he hasn’t really
mentioned it. He talks about his friends, the kid scissors he gets to use and
the painting and coloring. I think he is really going to thrive in this
program. His class does ABC cooking, so for each letter they make a food, so for "B", they made Brown Bear Biscuits (lots of sugar) but this may be a huge break through for Cooper and his trying new foods, he may break out of his shell a little bit when he sees other kids trying new things. So far so good, its been easy like Apples, but when they get to something like "P" where its peas or pigs in a blanket, he may be challenged a bit! But he will most likely be starving, so desperate times call for desperate measures, right?! I'll keep you posted :)

Anyway, both of them love it…. And you know who else loves it??? MOM, I get
THREE whole hours to myself. Which entails running, cleaning, showering, running
errands and a little consulting work- (yes, all in 3 hours). It’s amazing what
you can do in a quiet house alone! But I have to admit, I do love the
afternoons more. I pick the kiddos up at lunch time, so we get to eat together
and still have all day to be together. I know I won’t have days like these for
long, so I am really trying to soak it up now!

Today we celebrate our five year anniversary, which is
peanuts compared to my own grandparents who share the same day. Five years ago,
I stood before God, my family and my friends and I stood next to Josh,
promising to love him through richer and poorer and in sickness and in health.
I remember that day with so many emotions. Thank goodness for waterproof
mascara. And if you were at the wedding, there was a moment in time that was
completely silent, except for the sniffles. I think everyone was in tears. I
myself, remember crying a ton, laughing a lot and dancing even more. I don’t
think there was a foot in that ballroom that didn’t make it to the dance floor.
It was such a great day and looking back it seemed to have happened way too
quickly. Josh and I were just talking about it the other night, wanting to do it all
over again. We spent so much time and money getting ready for the big day, and
when we blinked we are five years later, two children later, two cities and
houses later. But we couldn’t be in a better place. I must say we have had a
ton of happiness, changes, stresses, sadness, laughs and cries…. But there is
no other person on this planet that I would rather wake up next to. With him I
am safe. I am genuinely happy. I feel loved. And with Cooper and Addison, I
feel like our family is complete. I couldn't ask for more and I don't think I can be any happier. Happy Anniversary to my better half (but we know who is better looking, right!?) Cheers to many more years of living the dream and loving life together.
